The Venetian Experience

With host artist, James Asher .

Venice is a painter’s paradise. Around every corner, over every graceful bridge is a magical composition waiting to be captured by you.

Every artist must experience Venice at least once in a lifetime.

The journey planned for you is the ultimate artist’s fantasy. You will fly to Venice where a private water taxi will pick you up for the trip across the lagoon to the dock of one of the most elegant hotels in all of Venice. This is the perfect location, only minutes from the very heart of the city

.

Painting locations have been planned with care and attention not only to visual interest and variety, but also for the convenience of the artists. Some of the iconic scenes are included, of course, but we will also experience the quiet canals and charming sights seldom visited by tourists. Expect to walk in the footsteps of Sargent, Turner, and Whistler. We will have access to a very special location never before available to any group of artists exclusive to the Passport and Palette guests.

Paint for a day at the most colorful of all the islands in the Venetian lagoon. The houses and their reflections in the canals will demand your entire palette of colors. Our own private boat will make the journey to the island convenient and relaxing.

One morning is planned for you to tour one of the factories making the most famous glass in the world. Some afternoon will be free to allow you to discovers your own treasures. You may choose to find your own painting location, give in to some shopping or just relax. From the welcome dinner to the final private and group painting critique with cocktails, your experience in Venice has been designed to delight the artist in you and to inspire memories for a lifetime.

James Asher attended Central Missouri University on an art scholarship and graduated with a
Bachelor of Science Degree. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Art Center College of design in Los Angeles, California.
While studying at the Art center, he developed a dedication to traditional painting techniques. For a short while he pursed a career in advertising, but soon became restless and returned to his passion for painting. He moved to Arizona and saturated himself with the lore of the cowboy and the Pueblo Indian culture. He traveled often to Mexico and painted the markets there.

Then, in 1982, after a severe bout with an allergy to turpentine, he reacquainted himself with watercolor. As his interest in watercolor evolved, his interest in subject matter broadened. His first London show inspired his first large body of European subjects. From his studio in Santa Fe, he travels and paints on location around the world. Painting destinations have included France, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands, England, Chile, Kashmir, Mexico and the western United States.

His many exhibitions include The Gilcrease Museum, The National Museum of Taiwan, The Albuquerque Museum of Fine Art, The Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, The fine Arts Museum of Santa Fe, Artists of America at the Denver Historical Society and the Royal Watercolor Society of London.

Asher has been profiled in American Artist, Southwest art, Western Art Digest, and many other prestigious art publications. He has authored articles for the Artist's Magazine and Watercolor Magic. He currently exhibits his watercolor paintings at the Zaplin-Lampert Gallery in Santa Fe.

Tonalism Movement

Artists by Movement:
Tonalism

America, circa 1880 to 1910

Tonalism is a style of painting in which landscapes are depicted in soft light and shadows, often as if through a colored or misty veil. Imported to the U.S. by American painters inspired by Barbizon School landscapes, it was a forerunner to the many schools and colonies of American Impressionism which arose in the first part of the 20th century.

The most influential practitioners of the style were George Inness, whose roots were in landscape painting, and James McNeill Whistler, whose approach was primarily aesthetic, aiming for elegance and harmony in the colors of a painting.

Tonalism's soft-edged realism also had an influence on the photography of the early 20th century - specifically on Alfred Stieglitz and his circle.

Post Impressionism

Post-Impressionism

France, 1880's to 1900

Post-Impressionism is an umbrella term that encompasses a variety of artists who were influenced by Impressionism but took their art in other directions.

There is no single well-defined style of Post-Impressionism, but in general it is less idyllic and more emotionally charged than Impressionist work.

The classic Post-Impressionists are Paul Gauguin, Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Rousseau and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The Pointillists and Les Nabis are also generally included among the Post-Impressionists.

The Journey! Impressionism

Impressionism

Centered in France, 1860's to 1880's

Impressionism is a light, spontaneous manner of painting which began in France as a reaction against the restrictions and conventions of the dominant Academic art. Its naturalistic and down-to-earth treatment of its subject matter, most commonly landscapes, has its roots in the French Realism of Camille Corot and others.

The movement's name was derived from Monet's early work, Impression: Sunrise, which was singled out for criticism by Louis Leroy upon its exhibition.

The hallmark of the style is the attempt to capture the subjective impression of light in a scene.

The core of the earliest Impressionist group was made up of Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Others associated with this period were Camille Pissarro, Frederic Bazille, Edgar Degas, Gustave Caillebotte, Edouard Manet, and the American Mary Cassatt.

The Impressionist style was probably the single most successful and identifiable "movement" ever, and is still widely practiced today. But as an intellectual school it faded towards the end of the 19th century, branching out into a variety of successive movements which are generally grouped under the term Post-Impressionism.
